Forest Concerts

After composing music in the threatened old-growth forests, Barbora holds a limited number of concerts in those very places.

A forest concert consists of a nature walk and a concert. The forest path to the concert stage is marked with land art created by the renowned international artist Wiebke Pandikow, who creates visual art using local materials. The land art, as it is created using natural materials exclusively, will be left in the forest to degrade with the rhythm of the seasons and become a part of the local landscape.

During the forest walk, the audience meets a forest expert and learns about the story of the particular forest they came to visit. It is an interactive experience that allows visitors a peek into the forest music composition techniques and offers a personal experience in a forest we rarely get to visit.

Come to experience something special and make a bond with the kind of forest our ancestors knew and guarded.

Venue Concerts

While forest concerts are unique and offer a direct connection for people in nature, our mission is to bring the essence of these stunning areas inspiring our work to audiences in urban settings as well. The venue concerts are our tool to do that and are tailored to fit the particular venues, festivals, and events.

A venue concert is a music performance on a stage, using soundscape recordings and projections to complement the music itself and to deepen the multisensory experience of the audience. The concert sound is set into a surround sound system, which is designed to provide an immersive experience for the audience. In this setup, the soundscapes come from all directions and the music comes from the direction of the performer.

Performance length: 60 mins

Soundscape installation
Using the sounds captured in the old-growth forests, the project sound artist Mikko H. Haapoja prepares a surround system soundscape installation that stands separately from the concert performance. It is accompanied by visuals by award-winning documentary filmmaker Ville Tanttu.

Workshops

As our forest concerts include an interactive walk through the old-growth forest to the forest venue, we also offer a direct forest music workshop experience for people who are interested in music making and the forest, and who want to learn more about the forest composition methods. We provide workshops for music school students and also for the wider public at festivals, venues, and events.

The workshops include a guided tour in the forest by a forest expert and a music composition workshop held by the main artist and composer, Barbora Šilhánová. The work we do together focuses on offering new perspectives on nature as a place of inspiration, connection, musicality of common sounds, and recording of sound for music making. The event includes a short music performance by Barbora.
